Cyanotis ciliata is a sprawling creeping plant with leaves edged in bristly hairs. It sometimes forms small blue pompom-like flowers. The ‘Hijau Baru’ cultivar is the most common form of the species in cultivation, with rounded green leaves which become stained dark red in intense light.

Cyanotis ciliata is sometimes labelled with its botanical synonym, Belosynapsis ciliata. It is not a Tradescantia, but a cousin in the same family – Commelinaceae.
