Tripogandra serrulata is an upright-growing plant with narrow, pointed leaves. The ‘Purple Scimitars’ cultivar is the most common form of the species in cultivaiton, with intense purple stems and leaves which stain dark purple in the sun.

Tripogandra serrulata is sometimes labelled with its botanical synonym, Callisia serrulata. It is not a Tradescantia, but a cousin in the same family – Commelinaceae.
